THOROUGHBRED GOLF CLUB (231-893-4653)
Michigan Golf Course Review
The Thoroughbred Golf Club in Rothbury - north of Muskegon, is the shining jewel of the Double JJ Resort and
annually ranks as one of West Michigan's top golf experiences, with a 4-1/2 star rating out of 5 by Golf Digest
Places to Play. The Resort features and incredible variety of accommodations ranging from western rustic to
modern lofts and condos - catering to golfers, couples, families and corporate personnel alike. A wide range of
activities from swimming to horseback riding are available, and the resort is also popular for winter recreation.

The golf course is drop dead gorgeous, as witnessed by the two photos above of the beautiful par four 2nd. This
hole features a tee shot that demands length and accuracy to a rolling fairway with a dense natural area situated
immediately left. As the number one handicap, this hole can be reached in regulation with a gutsy play over the
wetlands, or can be played safely to the right on the second shot - with hopes of an up and down par.
Aesthetically spectacular and visually intimidating, this is certainly the toughest of a group of very challenging four
pars. An extremely rolling terrain with elevation changes, uneven lies, extensive marsh areas and strategic
bunkering help to make this one of the most beautiful and challenging golf experiences in the state.
The well conditioned fairways are bordered by trees, bush and mounding and often lead to sloping green
complexes that feature ridges, tiers and undulations. There is a mix of conventional and pot style sand traps,
some with sod walls that result in difficult recoveries. Accuracy on approaches is necessary to score well here.
Golfers have four sets of tees to choose from, with distances and slopes measuring 6900 yards with an
astronomical slope rating of 147! It does not get much easier from the blue tees, which measure 6463 yards and
a 141 slope. We recommend the white tees for the average player, who will have all they can handle with a 135
slope at 6063 yards. The forward sets play to 4851 yards/126 slope. There are yardage blocks posted in the
fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards with 150 yard stakes also visible on all par fours and fives. Small markers on the flags indicate front, middle or back pin placements.
One of our favorite holes is the par four 12th - a view of the approach is pictured above left. Golfers will have to
lay up on the short dogleg left, to the 100 yard area. This sets up a downhill second shot to a well bunkered green
complex that is also guarded by a pond/marsh area situated immediately to the left. The back side features
some incredibly beautiful and unique green complexes that will challenge the accuracy of all levels of players.
The 18th is also beautiful (photo at the very top) golf hole. This finishing par five winds around a lake, and will be played as a three shot hole for most golfers.
Directly on property is an extensive practice facility with grass range, putting green plus a nice short game area
with sand bunker. The clubhouse includes a pro shop and an outdoor bar with sandwiches and light fare. Other
dining opportunities are located in the resort area nearby. If you are anywhere in West Michigan - the
Thoroughbred is a must play! And a stay at the Double JJ is also recommended. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
