Rackham Golf Course (248) 543-4040
Michigan golf course review
Rackham Golf Course, located just west of the Detroit Zoo on the I- 696 service drive, is conveniently situated and easily accessible to Detroit and all major suburbs. Managed by Vargo Golf (www.vargogolf.com), this Donald Ross design provides a forgiving and enjoyable layout for golfers of all skill levels. Rackham is a great value with affordable specials
and consistently good conditioning, and is one of the few courses in the region that attempts to stay open most of the year, weather permitting. .
Yardages are well marked by 150 yard stakes in the middle of the fairways and colored plaques at 100, and 200 yards from center green. Front, Middle, and back pin positions
are indicated by color coded flags that define the hole locations on all the putting surfaces. There are three sets of tees measuring to distances and slopes of 6,555 yards/118
slope from the back, 6253 yards/116 slope from the middle, and 5413 yards with a slope of 114 for women playing the forward tees.
The front and back nine are very different. The front features short dog legs and simple par threes that can easily yield low scores. The Back includes three par fours over 420
yards, and both par threes are over 200. With wide playing surfaces golfers will have considerable opportunities to use their driver. There are 61 bunkers situated greenside and
near fairway landing zones. Water does not come into play on course, which means golfers can find safe landing zones from tee to green.
The course layout features ample landing room with scattered trees alongside the ample fairways. Heavy bunkering is featured from tee to green, seemingly on each hole. Most
bunkers are small and surrounded by thick long grasses, causing more difficulty for those who land near the sand traps than those who land in them. Green complexes are
typical of a Donald Ross design, visibly raised and usually sloping from back to front with some sharp drop offs and false fronts. Generally speaking, it is better to be short than long.
The clubhouse has a small golf shop plus snack area serving hot and cold sandwiches, beverages and snacks. The outdoor patio provides numerous picnic tables for guests
and outings. There are 2 practice greens on property, but no driving range. Lessons of all types can be arranged. For more info, visit our page for this course with link to their website by clicking here.
