STONEGATE GOLF CLUB (231-744-7200)
Michigan Golf Course Review 7/15/05
Stonegate Golf Club in Twin Lake near Muskegon is a beautiful championship design that opened for play in July
2004. The course plays along an undulating terrain with manicured bent grass fairways bordered by mature
pines and hardwoods - with stately northwood residences dotting the landscape. This is a secluded setting, ideal
for golfers who appreciate natural environments. Marshes, natural areas and ponds are homes to a variety of native wildlife - and also help to create great some great shot selections.
On a rainy July afternoon, mist hung over the fairways and greens, but broke for a short while enabling us to
photograph the gorgeous green complex on the par four 8th. The photos below provide views of what players will witness on their approach, and also afford a view from behind.
Most of the green complexes are slightly raised, with some open in front and others protected by bunkers and
slopes. The bent grass putting surfaces were in extraordinary condition during our review, true rolling and only
mildly undulating. Fairways often contain one or more strategically placed white sand bunkers, usually near the opportune landing areas.
Golfers have five sets of tees to choose from, with distances and slopes measuring 6842 yards/135 slope, 6517
yards/127 slope, 5971 yards/118 slope and 5434 yards with a slope of 120 for women. The alternate set at
4402 yards was not yet rated. There are yardage blocks posted in the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards and
also on the cart paths, with 150 yard stakes also visible on all par fours and fives. Small markers on the flags indicate front, middle or back pin placements. Weather covers are standard on all carts.
The 3 par threes are an interesting group, and quite photogenic as witnessed by the above pictures. All golfers
will appreciate the layout for its combination of challenge and playability, and for its outstanding conditioning,
beautiful scenery and great value and service. On property is a temporary clubhouse - with a permanent facility
planned for a 2006 opening. There is a grass range and practice green. We recommend a round here highly! For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
