Michigan Golf Course Review 5/28/06
The Pines (at Lake Isabella) just northwest of Mt Pleasant is a par 72 Jerry Matthews designed championship
layout featuring a mix of wide and tightly tree-lined fairways along a mildly rolling mid-Michigan topography. This
is a good value golf experience, with rates including cart topping out in the mid $40 price range prime time in 2006.
Rye fairways and bent grass greens lead to slightly raised green complexes that are very mild in undulation.
Small flags one each flagstick indicate front, middle and back pin placements on these mid size putting surfaces
. 150 yard stakes are visible on all par fours and fives, and double as directional devices on the considerable
doglegs. There also are 100, 150 and 200 yard markers on the fairways. Golfers will encounter open faced greens, most protected by sand bunkers on both or either sides.
With four sets of tee boxes that present slope ratings ranging from 115 to 132, golfers will be able choose a set
that fairly challenges their skills. The tips play to 6856yards, the whites measure 6393 (but with only 1 par four of
400 yards plus), the gold's 5573 and the forward sets play to 5092 yards. The front side begins with a pair of
holes that dogleg to the left, and is designed with a mix of open and tight landing areas,. On the back side
golfers should be aware of hidden ponds short tight of the green on 12 and along the right side of the fairway on 13. These hazard are not clearly visible from the tee areas.
On property is a practice green and grass range with target flags. The clubhouse has simple but provides nice
amenities in the form of a small pro shop plus spacious restaurant/lounge that also doubles as host for outings
and parties. The course is playable for all levels of skills, and the location is just 15 to 20 minutes from the casino
and restaurants of Mt Pleasant. For more info, visit our page for the Pines, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
