Katke Golf Course at FSU in Big Rapids is an 18-hole championship facility that is perhaps central Michigan's
best golf value. With a rate of $35 including cart prime time on weekends in 2007, a round at Katke is a day well
spent! The terrain is surprisingly rolling, with many raised tees and a generous number of elevated greens that are often flanked by large sand traps on either side.
The parallel, valley fairways are separated by rows of pines and hardwoods, with strategic bunkering along the
way. 51 soft sand bunkers are situated near the landing zones or greenside, and water hazards come into play
on 5 holes. Unique features include a wood walled bunker on the par three 6th and a rock retaining wall that defines the pond in front of the green on the long par three 8th.
The acreage is void of residential properties, providing a seclude feel - and walking is allowed at any time.
Walkers will get a good workout on this undulating terrain however. The front side is tree lined with ample landing
zones, and the back side offers some beautiful natural areas and water hazards. The medium sized, mildly sloping bent grass putting surfaces were in excellent shape on our August 2007 visit.
There are three sets of tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 6737 yards/130 slope, 6179 yards/124
slope and 5122 yards with a slope of 124 for women playing from the forward tees. On course yardage markers
are situated at 100, 150 and 200 yards and sprinkler heads are also measured to the center of the green. Golfers are on their own to decipher the pin placements.
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop, snack area with outdoor patio, and locker rooms with showers for men
and women. The practice facility is a complete one - with a grass range (also mat hitting stations), short game
area with sand bunker plus putting green. There are partial cart paths which makes for a quick round - and the carts were some of the fastest we have encountered.
