HERITAGE GLEN GOLF CLUB (269-657-2552)
Michigan Golf Course Review
Heritage Glen is a course we have not heard much about - and it is a wonder why...Golf Digest has rated it with 4 stars out of five, rates with cart (in 2005) top out at around $50,
and this course is located in Paw Paw, not far from the I-94 and 131 highways - in West Michigan's wine country. There is a nice clubhouse (9,000 square feet) with pro shop,
restaurant/lounge with lunch items, beverages and hot & cold sandwiches, and locker rooms with showers for men and women. Practice facilities include a grass range, short
game area with sand bunker, and large putting green.
The golf course is a Jerry Matthews design, featuring an incredible mix of open links style holes together with those sculpted on tight tree lined fairways. Many of the holes are
designed on terrain similar in nature and aesthetics to the fine courses in Northern Michigan. Golfers will frequently play from elevated tee areas, with many green complexes also
raised. The par threes are especially strong - and as the two photos below indicate, feature challenge in the form of wetland carries and greenside ponds.
Water comes into play on eight holes, and 47 sand bunkers are located greenside and along the ample fairways. The putting surfaces are medium to large in size and mild in
slope. On course yardages are provided to the center of the green with markers at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and color coded flags indicate front, middle or back pin placements.
Some sprinkler heads are also marked.
Three sets of tees play to yardages and slopes measuring 6630 yards/137 slope, 6049 yards/ 131 slope and 5472 yards with a slope of 120. The ratings from the two forward
tees are 133 and 123 for women. As these ratings indicate, this is a challenging round of golf. Golfers will have go one or two clubs - more or less - depending upon whether the
shot is playing uphill or downhill. Skill at playing shots from side-hill lies with the ball positioned above or below the feet will also come in handy.
There also are some testy doglegs requiring accuracy of shot placement, mixed in with straight away holes that can be approached aggressively. There also is a variety in green
complexes - some with open fronts and others protected by bunkers, mounding and slopes. Most golfers will have the opportunity to play every club in their bag. This is a very
beautiful golf course that has been well taken care of. Throw in a friendly staff and nice facilities, and you have a winner. A round here is highly recommended - and it is definitely
worth the short drive off the highway to play here. For more info, visit our page for Heritage Glen, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
