Michigan Golf Course Review 8/01/07
Bear Lake County Highlands in Bear Lake just south of Manistee offers a scenic Northern Michigan golf
experience at a affordable rates. With prices topping out at just $50 including cart prime time in 2007, Bear
Lake features poa anna greens and well conditioned bluegrass tees and fairways that play along a very rolling terrain.
There are water hazards on 7 holes with 19 strategic sand bunkers situated near the landing zones or greenside.
Elevation changes and scenic views of Bear Lake add to this pleasurable golf experience. Beginners and ladies
will find this layout to their liking, and seniors can enjoy great weekday rates (only $24 including cart Monday - Friday in 2007).
There are 3 sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 6469 yards/126 slope, 6081
yards/122 slope and 5101 yards with a slope of 119 from the forward tees. On course golfers will find sprinkler
heads measured to the center of the green on all par fours and fives, and yardage plates are located at 100, 150 and 200 yards. Color coded flags indicate the days front, middle and back pin placements..
On property is a pro shop and snack area serving beverages and lunch items. There is a putting/chipping green
but no driving range. The course features wide, well conditioned fairways that are tree lined but have ample
landing zones. Most of the putting surfaces medium in size and mild in slope, with open fronts that invite a variety of pitches and chips.
There is significant room for recoveries off the tee and greenside, making this a very player friendly design. The
par three ninth plays from an elevated tee and is a memorable hole, and the par five 16th doglegs left and features a pond to the left of the green that creates the need for an accurate approach.
Rolling hills on a tree lind terrain with crystal clear lakes and ponds make this an aesthetically pleasing golf
environment. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
